Beginning January 1st, 2016, Alberta residents charged with distracted driving will be hit with three demerit points on their driving record, in addition to the existing $287 fine. As the last province in the country to add demerit points to its distracted driving law, the government hopes this new provision will deter drivers from distracting activities, saying that the fine alone was not enough.
